Wayne L. O’Roark, BS, DDS graduated from the University of Maryland with a Bachelor of Science in general biological sciences. He received his dental degree with honors from the same institution. Dr. O’Roark was president of his graduating class, elected to the Gorgas Odontological Honor Society, and Omicron Kappa Upsilon Honor Society.
He was selected to serve a rotating residency at the U.S. Public Health Service Hospital in San Francisco, California. This program is taught by board-certified specialists in oral surgery, prosthetics, periodontology, and general dentists. In addition, hospital rotations were made through general surgery, orthopedic surgery, and operating room anesthesia. Following completion of this program, Dr. O’Roark was assigned to the staff of the U.S. Public Service outpatient clinic in Honolulu, Hawaii.
As a General Dentist, a majority of Dr. O'Roark's work is implant dentistry and its associated prosthetics. He has experience extending for over 35 years in the field and has placed in excess of 10,000 implants. A study of the implants currently being used have shown a success rate in the area of 98%. His implant patients are showing a success rate of approximately 92% over the entire period, including those designs that are no longer used. This experience translates into confidence in the procedures necessary to transform your particular dental needs into functional, aesthetic, and comfortable prosthetic reconstructions. His constant contact with implantologists throughout the world assures you of the latest technology.
Dr. O'Roark is proficient in all areas of general dentistry and all of the implant types and prosthetics and can provide you with the proper implant procedures as dictated by your particular jaw conditions and your desires. Function is the fundamental reason for implants but this is followed closely by the aesthetic desires. With long experience as a general dentist, providing bridges, crowns, partial and full dentures, incorporation of implants into the options becomes second nature.
Dr. O'Roark was appointed a clinical graduate instructor at the Dental School, University of Maryland in July, 2006. In this capacity he teaches the graduate students implant dentistry as part of a General Dental practice. This teaching is through the seminar format, allowing a sharing of his extensive experience with implants.
Some Personal History
Dr. O'Roark is a DC local, born in Takoma Park, Maryland, lived in his early years on 20th Street NE (near the National Guard Armory). He attended Eastern Elementary and Maury Elementary, and one year at Elliot Jr High. His family then moved to Chevy Chase in Montgomery County where his dad opened a dental practice. He attended Leland Jr High in Bethesda and graduated from BCC Senior High School in Bethesda.
After leaving the US Public Health Service, he practiced with his father in Chevy Chase. When Dr. George O'Roark retired, Dr. Wayne assumed his father's practice. After over 30 years of practice in Chevy Chase, he moved to St. Marys County and opened his new office on Solomons Island, Maryland in 1999. He joined, part time, the practice of Dr David Cooper in Lexington Park in 2006 to provide implant services for their patients.
Dr. O'Roark has a private pilot's license (SEL with instruments), is open water Scuba certified and holds a Coast Guard Captain's License. He and his wife Sara have one son, Brian. His interests include old cars (1926 Chevrolet roadster), cruising with his wife of 40+ years (an operating room nurse) on their Grand Banks Trawler, debating the superiority of trawlers versus sailboats, fishing and enjoying grandfathership of Katie and Sean.
Some History of Solomons Island Office
Dr. O'Roark sold his Chevy Chase office in 2001. The Solomons Island office had been functioning for one day per week from late 1998 until that time. After a transition period of another one and a half years, he began operating in Solomons Island full time. Currently he restricts his work to mostly implant related services as part of a General Practice. Dr. Anne Etzkorn joined the practice to expand the available general dental services and times available for appointments.
The office is on the boardwalk on Solomons Island. There are excellent restaurants and shops within walking distance and the view and atmosphere is beautiful. It is an easy drive from Washington, DC and its suburbs as well as from Northern Virginia. Solomons Island is in southern Calvert County, in Southern Maryland.
Dr. Anne Etzkorn joined the practice in 2011. Dr. Etzkorn graduated from the University of Maryland, Dental School in Baltimore. She was Magna Cum Laude with a 3.8 GPA. and earned membership in Omicron Kappa Upsilon dental honorary. As part of her advanced status in her senior year, she was appointed as a Diamond Scholar which allowed her to participate in the graduate program of the Advanced Education General Dentistry (AEGD) or residency program along with her DDS program.
Dr. Etzkorn graduated from George Mason University Magna Cum Laude and was Valevictorian of her High School Class. She is an accomplished symphony orchestra member and professional artist.
In essence Dr. Etzkorn was enrolled in two training programs at once, the DDS and Residency programs. Only two in her class were so designated. She is proficient in all of the materials and techniques available to restorative dentistry. We are very fortunate to have her on our staff.
